There are few investments in the agricultural space that provide a better return for poor farmers. Buen Manejo del Campo (BMC) who manufactures and distributes Sistema Biobolsa, a patented, high quality biodigester system that enables smallholder farmers to convert animal waste into methane gas and organic fertilizer. BMC was founded in 2010, and has since revolutionized the biogas market in Latin America becoming the largest supplier of biodigesters in the region.
The initiative started in 2005 as part of the Mexico Biogas Program under the International Renewable Resources Institute (IRRI), a Mexican non-profit. Full commercial operations began in 2011, and BMC used its 80 pilot projects in six countries to drive initial sales.
By 2015, Sistema Biobolsa has impacted more than 7,000 people in rural Mexico and Latin America. Small farm families now earn more income through improved livelihoods.
